Seasonal Energy Efficiency Rating (SEER) is the rating given to AC units to help compare the potential energy efficiency of units among manufacturers.
Many people compare the SEER of an AC unit to the MPG’s of a car; the higher the number, the more efficient it is. Similar to the actual miles per gallon of a car, the operating efficiency of an AC unit can differ from the SEER label. Just like you can lower the MPG of your car by driving too fast, accelerating too much, or driving on low pressure tires, you can lower the efficiency of your AC unit with improperly paired equipment, improper installation, and lack of maintenance.
